New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council - CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE USAGE -
- Question - I have illegally used a controlled substance other than marijuana in the last 36 months. Does this negatively affect my being able to work as a Police Officer in New Hampshire?
- Answer - Time disqualification. NH PSTC Administrative rules 301.05 prohibit Hampton PD from appointing anyone who has illegally used a controlled substance in the 36 months prior to the date of submitting an application. A smaller time range is allowed if the usage occurred under the age of 21. In these cases, usage must not have occurred in 24 months prior to the date of submitting an application.
- Example - While studying for final exams in Nov 2016 a friend provided some Ritalin to help you concentrate. In our example Ritalin is a controlled substance not prescribed for your use. An applicant under 21 at the time of use would not be eligible for appointment as a Police Officer until Dec 2018 (24 months). An applicant age 21 or older at the time of use would not be eligible until Dec 2019 (36 months).
- Selection - Successful applicants must be able to truthfully state that they have not illegally used a controlled substance in the last 36 months or 24 months if under 21 at the time of the usage. Applicant statements are verified by Background and Polygraph Investigation.
